Justin and I will be exchanging vows at a very beautiful and very unique place in Chicago: The Bridgeport Art Center. As the site of the former Spiegel Catalog warehouse, the historic 1911 building is now home to a number of artists who use the space to work, take classes and create exhibits. The top floor, the Skyline Loft, is a stunning event venue with exposed brick walls, 15-foot wood beams and a 120-foot-long skylight.
When I first set up the appointment to visit the venue, I didn’t initially tell Justin where we were going — as it’s located on the South Side of Chicago in Bridgeport, just minutes away from where the White Sox play at U.S. Cellular Field. But even my die-hard Cubs fan fiance could overlook that fact after seeing the place. It was the exact kind of non-traditional, urban and elegant space we had been looking for. Plus it has a big parking lot and plenty of bathrooms — two seemingly simple things that we soon discovered were hard to find at a venue in the city. We also really liked the big freight elevator that takes you up to the top floor, the view of the skyline and the recycled materials used in the bar and bathrooms. It’s super cool! If you’ve seen our new home — a loft-like condo in Lakeview — you know it fits our style. And considering we live only a few blocks from Wrigley Field, it only seemed fair that our wedding should be by the White Sox!
WEDDING PLANNING
Our goal is to personalize our wedding as much as possible, starting first with this website, but also through the wedding decorations and through the wedding ceremony. Our decorations, if all goes according to plan, will be done by yours truly and feature a neutral palette with rustic components. Our ceremony will be an interfaith service, combining certain elements of both Jewish and Catholic traditions. Check the blog for updates as we forge ahead on both of those fronts.
